One of the major problems in the world today is the lack of clean, affordable and useful public transit. A clearly available solution exists, the electric train could replace a great amount of our dependency on fossil fuel as well as opening up the possibility of travel to a great many people who can not afford it now.
By changing over mass transit to rail systems, you could vastly decrease the amount of area being used for roads and parking lots, freeing up more land for ecological preservation.
